Who are we?

Formerly known as Lake & Oak Coppersmithing, we wanted a name that truly reflects the essence of our work and the unique materials we use. Enter “Redsmith's Forge”, which is a nod to the art of coppersmithing and its rich history. Inspired by the picturesque Ards Peninsula of Northern Ireland, we blend age-old techniques with contemporary design to craft striking copper pieces. We take pride in our hands-on approach, meticulously designing and handcrafting every item that leaves our workshop.

The term “redsmith” specifically highlights the beauty of working with red metals like copper and its alloys, which we believe deserve to be celebrated. It is also a lesser-known term for a coppersmith!

Meet the duo

Matthew Walton

Hi, I’m Matthew and I’m from Northern Ireland. Ever since my dad first took me fishing when I was young, I have gone fishing, hunting and camping all over the island of Ireland. As a result, this inspiration translates into designs in my metalwork projects.

My parents have been running Eden Pottery since I came into the world so I have been surrounded by creative individuals and influences, not to mention some fantastic traybakes and cakes! These influences led me to study Ceramics, Jewellery and Silversmithing at Ulster University where I met my beautiful partner, Caron. I also obtained first class honours and one of my final pieces, a hand-pierced copper salmon was used as a trophy for the Distinguished Graduate Award.

I thoroughly enjoy talking to anyone that enjoys our work and if you see me about, feel free to ask me anything!

Caron Ang

Hi, I’m Caron and I’m from Malaysia! I’m an avid traveler and I have been travelling since I was a baby! And because I love travelling so much, I have studied and lived in Dubai, Sheffield, Bangkok, Hong Kong and more recently, Belfast.

Before I decided to pursue MFA Design in Ulster University, I worked as a gemmologist for two years in Malaysia with the leading gemological laboratory. However, my ever burning passion for making jewellery eventually led me to Ulster University where I met my lovely partner, Matthew and where I eventually graduated with distinction!

As an artist, I draw inspiration from science, especially microbiology which I utilised heavily in my masters project. I like to think of art and science as being very similar and I aspire to continue exploring this relationship through my work!
